Today we have the Acer’s Nitro 5 entry-level gaming laptop. This series provides different processor and graphics specs for a slightly different price. Today in particular we’re looking at the Acer Nitro 5 that features a i5-8300H processor and NVidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB graphics. I’m a big laptop fan, as I believe that in 2019, laptops can deliver similar if not the same performance of it’s bigger brothers, with the benefit of size and convenience that you can carry your machine everywhere and enjoy it. I’ve had the Acer Nitro 5 for over 5 months now, and I cannot think of any negative aspects of this laptop. Especially, considering it’s price! In this review of Acer 5 Nitro laptop, I’m not going to dive into more technical aspect of this laptop. This review will be purely based on my experience as of regular user who needs a reliable laptop with impressive gaming performance at relatively low cost.
Design
In my opinion, the Acer Nitro 5 nailed the design of this laptop. I really like the black and red accent in addition to the red backlit keyboard. Speaking of the keys, they’re dedicated NitroSence with WASD and arrow keys being highlighted for easy location. Keys also feature a tactile feel with a travel distance of 1.6mm. This particular model features 15.6 inch Full HD IPS display which is very sturdy. Dimensions are as follows: 15.4 x 10.5 x 1.1 with a weight of just under 6 pounds – 5.95 lbs. Speaking of design again, another great feature of this laptop is that it provides 2 cases/slots – one for additional hard drive, another one for RAM. Speakers are bottom-mounted and surprisingly they don’t get buzzy when volume is cranked to the max, however, I personally never have it on max as it’s pretty loud, and you’ll probably want to use headphones anyways – especially for gaming. The Acer Nitro 5 provides a lot of connection options along its sides. on the left side you can find; Kensington lock, an RJ45 Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.0 slot, a USB-C port, and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. On the right side of Nitro 5; a DC-in port, a USB 2.0 and an audio jack.
Performance
As I said previously, I’m not going to dive into specific performance details like productivity & storage or graphics tests, however, I might leave it for the end of this blog for those who’re interested. The main reason I considered and later, bought this laptop is because I wanted something with solid performance that I could use for programming, gaming and other activities without breaking the bank and so far, this laptop nailed all my expectations. I’ve successfully used it with Visual Studio 2017, Android Studio and Java NetBeans IDE 8.2 and never had any issues or lags. Secondly, I’m not a huge gamer, but I run Sea of Thieves, and Battlefield 1 on highest graphics settings and never have any issues. If you’re not a hardcore gamer or maybe an entry-level gamer – Acer Nitro 5 has impressive performance that won’t leave u disappointed. The Acer Nitro 5 has a NitroSence fan-control app that let’s you control a dual-fan-ventilation for cooling management system. You can use preset settings, or manually adjust the fan speed of your CPU and GPU independently.
The NitroSence app is really cool as it lets you track your CPU & GPU temperatures/loading % on graphs. It also shows each of the fans current speed and lets you control your AC and battery modes. You can choose between “power saver”, “Balance” and “High-Performance”. You also have a CoolBoost switch which increases the maximum fan speed for heavier tasks and better cooling. One thing to note is that if you have your CoolBoost ON during a heavy task it might get very noisy as fans perform at the maximum speeds.
