On today’s blog we are going to go over the astro a50 gen 4s. These are the newest headphones that Astro have came out with. You have probably heard of Astro gaming as they are one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry along with Scuf, KontrolFreak etc…
In this blog we are going to be diving into my opinion about the Astro A-50s gen 4 as well as show you all the specs:
The headphones are the newest 2019 model. Currently they only come in one color which is black. However there are two versions of the headset. One is compatible with PC/PS4 and one is compatible with PC/XBOX ONE. They do not differ in design however the logos on the headphones and charging stand are silver for the PS4 version and are gold for the XBOX version.
A charging stand comes along with the Astros. There are clear directions on how to make the headphones compatible with its respective console in the manual, but the short answer is – just plug it into the console(or PC) with the provided USB cable. The manual is very useful, it shows detailed and labeled pictures of the connection process. The stand has a screen on the front of it that provides you with some useful info on the headphones. The battery life (displayed with 4 squares/dots), the console/pc that it is plugged into, the dolby audio or normal option, and a 1 2 or 3 that represents a different mode. All of these options can be controlled on the right side of the Astros. A on/off switch, dolby audio, and eq button (1/2/3) are located on the right ear on the backside. A volume control wheel sits bellow them. It is in a better place than some other headphones that I have used because when I lean back and my headset touches the back of the chair it does not mess with the volume. The stand charges the headphones by wireless charging. You simply place the headphones onto the stand and they magnetically snap in and began charging (a little animation plays on the stand screen). Be a little careful with placing the headphones on the stand because if you don’t get them perfect, the headset wont charge, but honestly it hasn’t been a problem for me. The magnet is also perfectly powerful so that it would hold the headphones on in case of an accidental table bump.
Now a little bit more about the headset. It has a microphone on the left side which mutes when flipped up and unmutes when you flip it down (which is amazing!). Its also very customizeable in how you want it positioned. The quality is better than most headsets but no where near amazing (as expected for a headset).
The headset also has a voice to game balancer on the right ear of it. To be honest I haven’t perfected it, or know how to use it efficiently enough to comment much about it. You basically press on one side of the right ear to make voice louder and on the other to make the game louder. For this reason, you can not customize the outer ear. Unlike a lot of astros, these can not be customized and will never be.
You can swap out the muffs for leather muffs but you will have to buy those separately. One down side I see in the provided ear muffs is that sound bleeds through them and people around you can sometimes hear what you are listening to.
The headset also adjusts up and down with similar Astro a40s technology. It slides up and down but you have to put a decent amount of force into it which is good because they don’t offset at regular use.
The battery on these headphones can hold up to 15+ hours and I’ve never gone down past 2 bars of power on these.
There is also a software that you can download on Astro’s website (https://www.astrogaming.com/en-us/products/headsets/a50-gen-4.html scroll a bit down). Its called Astro Command Center and you can customize your hearing experience the way you want. (Not available for PS4)
My opinion? These are some NICE headphones, real nice. However if you are looking for your first headset, maybe think twice about investing 300 dollars into these. Do not get me wrong but these are expensive. All be it, the sound quality is amazing and they are insanely comfortable. These also have an insanely powerful battery that will last you tons of hours. They will definitely help you step up your game if you’re trying to upgrade.
