Beats Studio earbuds review

We got the Beats studio earbuds on the release date on the 25th of June and since then, we got to use them for a little bit. First, we’ll talk about some of the features of these Buds, the quality of those features, and then share our opinion which should give you an idea of whether or not you should be getting these Beats studio earbuds now, or wait for a discount.

Beats Studio Earbuds come in 3 colors

Controls

Control clicking feature on these Beats studio earbuds is actually not “touch screen like”. It’s an actual button which is very cool in my opinion because it eliminates inconveniences of accidental touch/click (pausing or skipping) as with touch type earbuds. Beats studio earbuds controls are pretty simple, one click to pause, two to skip to the next track or a video, and hold to switch the modes from transparency to normal or to active noise cancellation. However, one thing that it doesn’t have, which is really disappointing in my opinion, is the “volume control”. In other words, there’s no way you can control volume on these Beats earbuds.

ANC (Active noise cancellation)

Beats Studio Buds

First and most important is the active noise cancellation, which is one of 3 modes. The modes consist of the normal mode, transparency mode as well as the previously  mentioned ANC mode. You can all fiddle with all the modes in the beats app, which is just a typical app to control your earbuds features, set click commands and change basic settings.

As for the active noise cancellation, it could definitely be improved, we haven’t noticed much difference between the modes. We’ve tested this feature with music playing and without. With music playing the active noise cancellation is pretty good, but this might also be due to the fact that you have something playing directly in your ears. You’ll get the same experience with “normal” mode and won’t be able to tell the difference.
Without the music playing, the active noise cancellation does suppress the noise but the AirPods Pro completely beat these out (obviously the price is a lot bigger). We would rank the Beats studio earbuds active noise cancellation somewhere in the middle, it’s not super bad, but also nothing special. So if you’re looking for earbuds exclusively for this feature, Beats studio earbuds aren’t something you should be looking into.

Battery use

Beats Studio app

Battery on these buds will last you differently based on how you use them. If you’re using them without active noise cancellation, they should last you about 8~ hours. With the active noise cancellation, battery life reduces to around 5 hours. However, with the case, your combined listening time should be around 24 hours, and with a fast fuel 5 minute charge, that gives you up to 1 hour of playback, which is very similar to the Samsung Buds Live which we’ve reviewed earlier.

Beats studio earbuds case

Beats studio earbuds case

One of our favorite small “handy” features is that the earbuds actually snap into the case with a magnet, and even if the cap is opened by accident, the buds won’t fall out unlike Samsung buds. However, one thing the case is missing is wireless charging. The provided USB-C to USB-C cord is very short and inconvenient. There’s physically no way to charge these Beats Studio earbuds with the provided cable as nothing in my house has a USB-C adapter, except my phone. So I actually have to use my phone charger to use the earbuds.

Sound Quality

Quality of the sound is very good, but the same is true for all new true wireless headphones in the 150$ range. You can’t really tell the difference between all those high-end brands, unless you work with music and have very sharp ears. What sets them aside is the quality of the ANC (Active noise cancellation). Some people did notice however, that these Beats Studio earbuds have great bass, and the mids are a little bit faded as mentioned above, but you can’t really tell. It is overall, very high quality sound.

Beats Studio Earbuds compared to other brands

Conclusion

As many of you might know, Beats are owned by Apple, but these earbuds are actually focused towards Android users. If you’re an Android user, you should be considering the Beats Studio Earbuds, however, if you’re an Apple user, the AirPods (especially Pro) are a way better choice and their ANC (active noise cancellation) is way superior. But if ANC is not the biggest concern, these earbuds will do at $150 price mark. However, at this price point you can consider other options such as the Samsung Buds Live which at the moment of writing this blog are only $129.99 (you can also watch Samsung Buds Live review here)
